Nonviolent Communication in Schools and Kindergartens

24th -26th October 2008 in Stockholm

This event offers an opportunity for everybody who is working actively in education or being interested in sharing NVC in schools and kindergartens, to deepen the NVC consciousness and strengthen their nonviolent communication skills.

For three days we will practice communication that fosters compassion, supports cooperation and stimulates inner motivation. We will explore how we can enrich our work in schools and kindergartens with nonviolent values and the NVC model.

Imagine a school where children say, "Bullying is not our style¨

because they have been treated with respect and understanding.

We will share experiences from a school like that, Skarpnäcks free school, that demonstrate how to sustain a safe and creative learning environment with an empathic attitude and a real sense of inclusion, where children learn and work from willingness and where there are no punishments or rewards.

The 23rd of October is a separate open visiting day at Skarpnäcks free school . For participants in this workshop, the 23rd is included in the workshop fee. On the 24th we will share the school facility with teachers and students at Skarpnäcks free school as an extra live experience.

The aim of the training is for participants to

  1. practice how to implement NVC in daily school and kindergarten life – in meetings, when making rules and when handling conflicts
  2.  be able to contribute to school development based on dialogue and cooperation supported by NVC skills.

Participants will practice

  1. expressing honesty, clearly showing your values and beliefs
  2.  empathic listening in different conversations
  3.  when and how to use force to protect values and needs with children
  4.  the balance between individual needs and the needs of the group
  5.  expressing appreciation in ways that contribute to self confidence and growth
  6. Time:

Friday the 24th of Oct 2008 from 10.00 am to Sunday the 26th of Oct, 2008 at 16.00.

    Friday 10-17, Saturday 9-17, Sunday 9-16

Place for the workshop:

Skarpnäcks free school address: Horisontvägen 24, Skarpnäck, Stockholm

Transport: Metro T17 from T-centralen to Skarpnäck station takes19 min, walk for 5-10 min.

Tuition: SEK 2.500 (+VAT), €270. This fee includes the visit day the 23 October. Coffee and tea in breaks are included.

Accommodation will be in hostels or hotels central in Stockholm at extra cost (or private stay in the school/NVC community). We will support participants in finding accommodation.

Short info about Skarpnäcks free school, Stockholm

Skarpnäcks free school started with an initiative from a group of parents .They were worried about how their seven-year-olds already were loosing their desire to learn and go to school. These parents wanted a different kind of school for their children—one based on democratic principles outlined in our national curriculum and respectful compassionate interactions, a place where their children could be more active in their learning and free to express themselves.

In 1998 teachers and parents together started to build a school from inclusion, with partnership relations, where students work from willingness, without punishments and rewards. Nonviolent Communication has been the main inspiration and guidance in this work. Now we have 80 students, age between 6 and 15, and we celebrate rewarding results after 10 years of exploring new, more life-affirming ways to be in school and educate our children.
